Age is just a number, right? Well, maybe for some people.

There are many reasons why a man might ask a woman her age when getting to know her.

It could be because he is interested in her as a potential partner.

Or it could be that he’s not romantically interested in her but is just curious about her age because she seems younger than she looks.

Here are the reasons why men ask a woman’s age and what you should do when faced with this situation.

1) It’s a formality.

Sometimes, a guy just wants to know how old you are because it’s a formality. Let’s say you’re at a party or you’ve just met at a bar.

You’re having a great conversation, maybe flirting a bit, and he wants to know how old you are.

For some, it’s a matter of having all the facts before deciding whether to go further with a woman.

If you’re having a great conversation and the guy asks you how old you are, it’s not necessarily an indication that he’s only interested in younger women.

He might not even be aware that you’re younger than he is. If this is the case, and you don’t want to answer the question because you’re not interested in going any further, you should be honest with him and say so.

2) He’s just curious.

Some men have a genuine curiosity about how old the woman he’s interested in is.

For example, he may have dated women from all different age groups and may be interested to see what someone at the other end of the spectrum is like.

Or, he may be curious about the kind of life experiences you have had. For example, he may wonder if you’ve had children or if you’ve gone to school recently.

However, his curiosity shouldn’t come across as an interrogation. If he acts like he’s trying to get a confession out of you, it’s best to tell him you don’t want to answer the question.

3) He wants to be respectful and doesn’t want to lie.

Some men prefer dating younger women and want to be honest about their desires.

If you tell them that you don’t want a relationship and they ask you about your age, they may ask to know your age because they want to respect your desires.

If they ask you about your age and you tell them that you don’t want to date anyone, they may decide to be honest and tell you that they only want to date someone younger.

4) He wants to make sure you’re on the same page.

Guys don’t like to be tied down before they’re ready.

If he asks you for your age and you’re younger than he is, he might think you’re looking for a serious relationship.

But if you’re older, he’ll know he has more freedom. He’ll know that there aren’t any hard and fast rules about when he needs to have a ring on your finger.

If you’re the one who asks him for his age and he’s younger than you, it might be because he’s just trying to make sure you’re not looking for something serious.

It could be that he’s just trying to get an idea of how long this “thing” with you might last.

5) He knows there will be an age gap between you two.

If a guy asks about your age and says that he knows there will be a gap, he may be trying to get a feel for how much of a gap there will be.

If you tell him there will be a big gap, he may be trying to decide if that’s a deal-breaker for him.

6) It’s an icebreaker to get the conversation started.

Some guys like to take a risk whenever they talk to a woman.

If a guy sees you at a party or somewhere else, then he may have to start a conversation with you.

Many guys feel awkward asking a woman for her number, so they wait for the woman to take the lead.

So how can he break the ice? Well, if a guy asks you for your age, it’s a risk that he’s taking. This can help him to get the conversation started and make it easier to ask you for your number.

7) He likes you but doesn’t think you like him back.

This is a very rare reason why a guy would ask you for your age, but it does happen.

If he likes you and you seem like a cool person but he doesn’t think you like him back, then he may ask your age to try to find out more about you.

This could be to see if he has anything in common with you or to see how you relate to him.

8) He prefers older women or younger women.

Some men prefer dating older or younger women.

If you tell him that you aren’t interested in dating him and he asks you about your age, he may be trying to figure out if you are his preferred age range.

He may also be trying to figure out if you are open to dating him even though he might not be in your preferred age range.

9) He doesn’t want to waste your time or his own.

Sometimes a guy will ask for your age because he doesn’t want to waste either your time or his own.

If he doesn’t want to get serious with you yet, he doesn’t want you wasting time trying to get him to commit.

If you’re obviously interested in a serious relationship, and he just wants to date casually, he doesn’t want to waste your time by stringing you along.

He also doesn’t want to waste his own time if you’re interested in something more serious, but he doesn’t feel the same way.

If he asks how old you are, it might be an attempt to cut things off before things get too serious and you get hurt.

10) He’s testing you.

In the same way that people test others to see if they are genuine, a guy might ask you about your age as a test to see if you are honest with him.

To some guys, age is an important factor in a relationship. Some guys might want to date a woman who is only a year or two younger than them.

If he asks you how old you are, it could be because he wants to see if you will lie about your age and try to make yourself look younger.

If he asks you this question, it might be because he wants to test how genuine you are and see if you are willing to be honest with him.

What should you do?

1) Respond to his question with a question of your own.

If a potential romantic partner asks how old you are, try to respond with a question of your own.

For example, if he asks “How old are you?”, you could ask him “What’s your dating or relationship preference?”

This way, he knows you’re not comfortable answering such a personal question, but you’re giving him a polite way to get the information he’s looking for.

By responding with a question, you’ve also proven that you’re mature and confident enough not to feel threatened or offended by his question.

After all, it’s not an unreasonable query, but it can be easily deflected, too.

2) Tell him what you’d be willing to tell him if he asked more politely.

If a guy asks you how old you are, you could tell him that you’re not comfortable answering such an invasive question, but you would be willing to tell him how old you are if he were to ask politely instead.

“I’m not comfortable telling you how old I am, but if you were to ask me more politely, I’d be willing to tell you my age.” When you tell someone something like this, you’re being firm and polite.

You’re letting him know that his question was rude, but you’re also giving him a way to get the information he wants.

By giving him a polite way to get the information he’s looking for, you’ve proven that you’re mature and confident enough not to feel threatened or offended by his question.

3) Tell him how old you are before he has a chance to ask again.

Another way to respond to his question about your age is to tell him how old you are before he has a chance to ask again. You could say “I’m 35 years old” or something similar.

This way, he knows your age and you don’t have to feel uncomfortable answering such a personal question.

By telling him how old you are before he has a chance to ask again, you’ve proven that you’re mature and confident enough not to feel threatened or offended by his question.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, you can’t control what a guy is going to ask you.

You can only control how you react to it and if you want to continue talking to him after he asks.
